About Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj: A Life of Spiritual Quest
Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj was born on September 8, 1951, in the village of Dhanana, Sonipat, Haryana, into a farming family. His parents were Bhakt Nandram and Bhaktmati Indradevi. After completing a diploma in Engineering, he worked as a Junior Engineer in the Irrigation Department of the Haryana Government.
From an early age, Rampal Ji was deeply religious. For 25 years, he was a dedicated devotee of Hanuman Ji, reciting the Hanuman Chalisa seven times daily. For 18 consecutive years, he visited a famous Hanuman temple in Salasar, Rajasthan. He also considered Shri Krishna Ji his supreme deity, worshipping him along with Khatu Shyam Ji, and spent hours in meditation. Despite his rigorous devotion, he never met God, nor did he find true physical well-being or mental peace. Driven by a burning desire for God, he constantly sought out sadhus and mahatmas.
Encounter with Swami Ramdevanand Ji Maharaj
One day, he met a 107-year-old Kabir Panthi saint, Swami Ramdevanand Ji Maharaj. Rampal Ji asked him how one could achieve God and mental peace. Swami Ramdevanand Ji inquired about his religious practices. Rampal Ji explained that he fasted, visited temples, and worshipped Hanuman, Krishna, and Shyam Ji, while observing all festivals and performing ancestral rites (shraadhs).
Swami Ji told him that these practices were ineffective for attaining God or finding peace. He quoted Kabir Sahib Ji:
“Kabir, mai masaani sed sheetla, bhairo bhoot hanumant”
“Sahib se nyaara rahe, jo inko poojant”
“Kabir, patthar pooje Hari mile, to main poojun pahaar”
“Taatein chakki bhali, pees khaaye sansaar”
Swami Ji explained that these practices, being a product of Kaal Niranjan’s (Brahm’s) false illusions, could not end the blows of fate, bring mental peace, or grant complete salvation. He revealed that Kaal Niranjan is the master of 21 universes, known as Jyoti Niranjan, with his wife Ashtangi (Prakriti/Sheraanwali) Maya, and three sons: Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. Together, they have misled all beings, concealing the path to the true Supreme God, Satpurush.
By worshipping them, one’s fate cannot be erased, and one must continue to experience the cycle of karma: good actions lead to heaven, bad actions to hell, and then rebirth into the 84 lakh species of life. Satguru Garibdas Ji Maharaj’s words support this:
“Garib, Brahma Vishnu Maheshwar, Maya aur Dharamrai kahiye”
“In paancho mil prapanch banaaya, vaani humri lahiye”
Swami Ji told him that above Brahm (Kshar Purush) is Parbrahm, and above Parbrahm is the Purna Brahm (Param Akshar Purush), God Satpurush. By worshipping Satpurush, fate’s blows are erased, mental peace is achieved, and complete salvation is attained. Confused by these new revelations, but accepting their truth, Rampal Ji took his first initiation (Naam Updesh) from Swami Ramdevanand Ji on February 17, 1988.
A Transformative Journey
One day, Rampal Ji accompanied Swami Ramdevanand Ji to his ancestral village. Swami Ji’s sister-in-law told him a story: when Swami Ji was 16, he met a Kabir Panthi Mahatma while grazing animals. Inspired by the saint, he immediately left his home and never returned. His family, finding his clothes in the jungle, assumed a wild animal had killed him and had been performing his shraadhs for 70 years. This event deeply impacted Rampal Ji, confirming that such rites and idol worship were futile.
Another incident further solidified his belief. While at a relative’s house, he gave a piece of bread to a dog. Instead of eating it, the dog buried it. The next morning, it dug up the now-dry bread and ate it. When Rampal Ji mentioned this, his relative explained that the dog never ate on Tuesdays, which was the previous day. Rampal Ji concluded that the dog, in its previous human life, must have been a devout observer of fasts, a practice that ultimately led him to a dog’s life.
Seeking the true path, he began to practice the spiritual name given by Swami Ji and meticulously studied all the holy scriptures, including the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, Kabir Sagar, and the works of saints like Garibdas Ji, Guru Nanak Ji, and Dadu Ji. He discovered that Swami Ji’s teachings were fully supported by these scriptures. For instance, in Gita Chapter 14, verses 3-5, Kaal Niranjan identifies himself as the father of all beings and Prakriti as the mother, with their three sons (Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh) binding the soul. Similarly, Devi Bhagavad Mahapurana and Shivpurana also support this, stating that Ashtangi (Durga) is the mother of the three gods and Jyoti Niranjan (Mahashiv/Brahm) is their father. The Vishnu Purana and Gita Chapter 11, verse 32, also confirm that Vishnu and the Gita’s speaker are, in fact, Kaal.
Through his intense chanting of Satnaam and Saarnam, he met Purna Brahm Kabir Sahib and realized the ultimate truth. This led to a state of perpetual mental peace and happiness.
Spreading the True Path
In 1994, Swami Ramdevanand Ji Maharaj instructed Rampal Ji to begin giving Naam-Daan (initiation). Viewing this as his primary duty, he started spreading the message from village to village. This new mission required him to leave his government job after 18 years of service.
As devotees received initiation, they began to experience both worldly happiness and spiritual benefits. Soon, people with chronic illnesses and troubled families started seeking his refuge. He explained to them that he did not use charms or magical incantations. His method was to give the spiritual instruction (Updesh) of God Kabir’s Satnaam.
He told them that those who have received the true Satnaam and chant it with faith will see their miseries vanish and attain peace of mind. He quoted Kabir Sahib:
“Kabir, jab hi Satnaam hriday dharo, bhayo paap ka naash”
“Jaise chingi agni ki pari puraane ghaas”
He explained that many saints use incorrect spiritual names. The true Satnaam is found in the teachings of saints like Dharamdas Ji, Garibdas Ji, Guru Nanak Ji, and Dadu Ji, and its chant is performed with breath, concentration, and attention. This practice, known as ajappa jaap, allows one to see God and overcome worldly sufferings.
He emphasized that there is only one true God and one path to complete salvation. Without this knowledge, gods, humans, and sages remain trapped in Kaal Niranjan’s cycle of rebirth. He used the example of Mother Parvati, who even after 108 births with Lord Shankar, was not free from this cycle.
Today, Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj has millions of disciples across India who have given up vices like alcohol, drugs, meat, and social evils like idol worship and fasting. By chanting the true Satnaam, they are experiencing worldly happiness and spiritual fulfillment. Thousands have been cured of chronic diseases, and countless ruined families have found prosperity in his refuge.
